Update on Fire at Dyna Nobel Explosive Plant

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

At 6:15 pm on June 8th the Saratoga Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire at the Dyna Nobel Explosive Plant located on the south end of Saratoga Springs.

Upon arrival fire department staff conferred with Dyna Nobel staff on the contents of the structure.  Dyna Nobel advised there were several different hazardous materials in the structure.  A joint decision was made not to extinguish the fire because of the danger to emergency personnel, there was no threat to life, and the nearest residents were at a safe distance.

A hazardous materials team from the Provo/Orem fire departments were called to provide air monitoring around the incident.  As a precautionary move residents in Lake Mountain and Pelican Bay were asked to stay inside and close windows in the event of wind shift.  The air quality remained good throughout the incident, and at no time was there a chance of an explosion because large amounts of explosive material were not stored in this structure.

At approximately 2:00 am it was decided the scene was safe enough to enter to extinguish what parts of the structure were not already consumed by fire.  Fire department crews remained on scene throughout the morning.  The building is considered a total loss.  An investigation into the cause of the fire will begin this afternoon.

Agencies assisting at this incident include: Lehi Fire Department, Eagle Mountain Fire Department, Goshen Fire Department, Cedar Fort Fire Department, Lone Peak Fire Department, Saratoga Springs Police, Utah Highway Patrol, Utah County Sheriffs office and Rocky Mountain Power.

2100 North Project Update: 6/9/10

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010
The following are planned activities for the coming week. Please note that due to weather, project conflicts, or equipment/supply issues, schedules are subject to change.
As summer approaches and work on the 2100 North project ramps up, please remember to drive carefully in the work zone.  Crews will be out working in the roads and there will continue to be increased truck traffic.

As a reminder, that there are two projects underway in the area.  UDOT is constructing the new 2100 North and UTA is busy building the rail bridges.

Current Construction Activities

  • The area east of the 2300 W./2100 N. intersection has now been excavated in preparation for installation of the new roadway.  Once the east leg of the intersection is complete, traffic will be shifted onto the new pavement while the remaining portions of the intersection are excavated and built.  With safety in mind, these activities have been planned during summer recess and are scheduled to be complete before school resumes this fall.
  • Over the next two months, there will be concentrated construction operations at the intersection of 2100 N./2300 W.  Residents can expect brief, intermittent one-way flagging operations at the intersection during this time.

Ongoing Project Impacts

  • Crews will continue preparing the west side of the project between the Jordan River and Redwood Road for the future roadway.  This work includes installing walls, placing fill material and placing underground drainage pipes.
  • Construction activities east of the railroad tracks are now scheduled to resume in August. Please watch these updates for additional information.
  • In the interest of safety, the small section of Jordan River Trail that falls within the project area has been closed. Access along the trail to the north and south will remain open, but there will be no connecting access through the project during construction.
  • In order to construct the new railroad bridge and subsequently build the roadway beneath the bridge, UTA and UDOT have fully closed 2100 North between 2300 West and Pointe Meadows Drive. This closure will remain in place through Fall of 2011. Motorists should plan to use 1500 North as an alternate route.

Fire Hydrant Testing

Monday, June 7th, 2010

The Saratoga Springs Fire Department will begin fire hydrant testing this week Monday through Friday.  Hydrant testing will last approximately 2 months.  There are over 850 fire hydrants in the city to test and inspect to make sure they are in working condition.  Residents may encounter cloudy water after a fire hydrant test.  If cloudy water occurs run a faucet in the home for 5 minutes to clear the water.  Residents must keep a clear path of 3 feet around a fire hydrant.  If the access to a fire hydrant is obstructed firefighters may not see the fire hydrant or there may be a delay in providing water at a fire.
