Letter from Mayor Love

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

May 19, 2010

The City Council and I express our heartfelt concern to the residents of the City who have been ill recently with the Campylobacter bacteria.

We appreciate the residents’ patience during the recent boil order.  We know that this is a tough procedure and that it creates confusion and a lack of trust in the water system.  We did not enact such an order lightly and want you to know that it was carried out as a precaution in the case that the water system was contaminated.

Operating a safe drinking water system is our highest priority (as my family and I drink the same water as all of you). We have and will continue to take whatever steps are necessary to provide safe water.  These measures, including ongoing chlorination, are prudent for the City to take since we have not yet identified the source of the bacteria.  In addition, we have not yet had a positive test in the culinary water system that would indicate bacterial contamination.  We are testing the secondary water system and checking for possibilities of contamination from residential cross connection of both water systems. We have been and will continue to chlorinate in order to eliminate the potential of any contamination that may be in the water. The city has been testing the water frequently; however, we will instruct staff to test every week if that is what it takes to restore all of our confidence in the drinking water.  We are working diligently with the Utah County Health Department, the State Health Department and the State Division of Drinking Water to investigate all possible sources of potential contamination.

The City is dedicated to finding the cause of the outbreak and will work diligently to identify all possibilities.  Many residents have provided their names and addresses to City personnel and to the County Health Department so that we can understand how widespread this illness was.  We thank you for doing this and know that this information will help our understanding of the situation.

All residents have our promise that the City is working as diligently as possible to find solutions to this problem.  We live in this community with you and providing safe drinking water is the most important thing we do for our own health and the safety of our loved ones.   Rest assured that we care about you and are doing everything physically possible to find answers and resolve concerns.

Again, we thank you for your patience and promise to keep residents informed of our progress.

We will continue to update the City’s website as more information becomes available.  For more information, call the city offices 801-766-9793 or call me personally 801-319-6415.

 Sincerely,

 Mia B Love, Mayor

2010 Utah Lake Festival

Monday, May 17th, 2010

2010 Utah Lake Festival – Free Fishing, Games, Food & Fun For All!

The sixth annual Utah Lake Festival will be held Saturday, June 5, 2010, from 10 am to 2 pm, at Utah Lake State Park. The purpose of the Festival is to offer Wasatch Front residents a chance to get outside and enjoy Utah Lake, experience its many recreational opportunities and offerings and learn about the lake’s ecosystem, native species and the importance of stewardship. The Festival will offer an array of activities for everyone, including the opportunity to make and wear fish hats, free fishing, canoeing demonstrations, a sail boat regatta, a water ski show, games and activities for kids, music and boat tours. There will also be free hot dogs, snow cones, apples, popcorn, cotton candy and water for Festival attendees. Park entrance is free during the Festival.
Attendees will also receive a “Utah Lake Festival Passport” at the Utah Lake State Park’s visitor center.  The passports are used to collect stamps from selected educational and activity booths. Once attendees obtain all of the required stamps they can take their passports to the visitor center and receive a free t-shirt and stickers! The June Sucker Recovery Implementation Program (JSRIP), a program designed to recover the endangered June sucker fish that lives only in Utah Lake, the Utah Lake Commission, a group comprised of local government officials and state agency leaders, the Utah Lake State Park and multiple municipalities surrounding Utah Lake are working together to put on this year’s Utah Lake Festival.
Historically, Utah Lake was used recreationally much more than it is today. More than 20 resorts once dotted the shoreline. Show boats, with live music and dancing, took people out for excursions to Bird Island, airplanes landed on sandy beaches to offer people rides, and for decades boat races were held as a Memorial Day mainstay in the Provo Harbor.   Although there are countless stories to be told about Utah Lake’s past, the Lake has much to offer today.  Whether you visit for adventure or relaxation, this massive freshwater lake and its miles of shoreline are sure to please everyone.
For more information about the Utah Lake Festival, Utah Lake or the JSRIP contact Vesna Ilic at 801.364.0088, ext. 104, or visit www.junesuckerrecovery.org or www.utahlakecommission.org.

Boil Order Lifted

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

At 6:00 PM on Saturday, May 15, 2010 the City of Saratoga Springs, in conjunction with the Utah County Health Department and the State of Utah Division of Drinking Water, has lifted the order to boil all drinking water. As of this time there is no need to boil drinking water anywhere within the City of Saratoga Springs. Sample testing of the water system reveals no bacteria or other contaminants. In addition, the City has successfully completed a comprehensive chlorination of the entire water system, both north and south.

As a precaution, the City recommends that residents flush the water in their homes by letting each faucet, both hot and cold, run for 5-10 minutes. Ensure that you completely drain your hot water heater allowing a refill of fresh water.
